Brief History – Foundation of D.E.C. School Thankorosidia

D.E.C. School Thankorosidia was founded on Monday, September 4, 1972, at a time when access to formal education in many rural communities was limited. In the days leading up to the official opening, a series of important and purposeful meetings were held between the town elders of Thankorosidia and a high-powered delegation of education committee members from the district headquarters in Kabala. These discussions focused on the need to bring structured, accessible education closer to the people and to ensure that children in Thankorosidia and surrounding villages were given the opportunity to learn and progress.

The acronym D.E.C. stands for District Education Committee, reflecting the school’s strong roots in district-level educational planning, coordination, and community participation. The establishment of the school was not an isolated decision, but the result of careful consultation, shared vision, and collective commitment between local leadership and district education authorities.

Prior to the opening of the school, the town elders—headed by Alhaji Mohamed Fofanah—engaged in several consultative meetings with the Ministry of Education and education authorities in Kabala. These engagements addressed key issues such as school authorization, staffing, supervision, and the long-term sustainability of the institution. Through these consultations, a clear framework was established to guide the school’s operation and growth.

The process demonstrated a strong partnership between the community and the government, built on mutual respect and a shared understanding of education as a tool for development. It also reflected the willingness of the people of Thankorosidia to take ownership of their future by supporting and hosting a formal educational institution within their community. This collaborative foundation set the tone for the school’s early years and continues to define the legacy of D.E.C. School Thankorosidia.
