Special Recognition: Alhaji Mohamed Fofanah

The Visionary Behind the Foundation

The D.E.C. School Thankorosidia Old Students Association (DECTOSA) accords special and lasting recognition to Alhaji Mohamed Fofanah, whose vision, leadership, and wisdom were central to the establishment of D.E.C. School Thankorosidia.

At a critical moment in the history of Thankorosidia, when access to formal education was limited and uncertain, Alhaji Mohamed Fofanah emerged as the driving mind and guiding force behind the idea of bringing an organized school to the community. As head of the town elders, he provided direction, coordination, and moral authority, ensuring that the dream of education for the children of Thankorosidia moved from discussion to reality.

Alhaji Mohamed Fofanah led and participated in several consultative meetings with district education authorities in Kabala and with the Ministry of Education, representing the interests and aspirations of the community with clarity, patience, and determination. His ability to unite elders, engage government officials, and maintain community consensus was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the school’s successful opening on Monday, September 4, 1972.

Beyond administration, his leadership symbolized foresight. He understood that education was not only about classrooms and teachers but also about shaping character, opportunity, and the future of generations yet unborn. The lasting impact of D.E.C. School Thankorosidia—seen today in the lives of professionals, leaders, and contributors both in Sierra Leone and across the diaspora—stands as a living testimony to his vision.

DECTOSA honors Alhaji Mohamed Fofanah as the man behind the brains, a pillar of wisdom whose courage and commitment helped transform a community’s hope into an enduring institution. His legacy continues to guide us, reminding us that true leadership plants seeds whose fruits are enjoyed long after the planter is gone.

May his memory remain a blessing, and may future generations never forget the foundation he helped to lay.
